Obituary of Brian M. Flynn

Please share a memory of Brian to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Brian Michael Flynn passed away at the age of 68 at his home in Blairstown on October 19, 2021 surrounded by family.  He was born in Hoboken, NJ to Donald and Barbara Kolbusz Flynn on November 5, 1952.

Brian grew up in Hasbrouck Heights and attended Paramus Catholic High School, later graduating from Seton Hall University where he was inspired by his late mentor Owen McEvoy.

For over 40 years, Brian was an Emmy award winning set designer, crafting and assembling scenery for TV and theater.  With paint, wood, tools, and an eye for color and detail he built the background spectacle behind corporate trainers, presidential candidates, infomercial presenters, Hollywood’s brightest stars, and countless others in hundreds of commercials, plays, comedy sketches, and shows. In his spare time, he enjoyed designing sets for high school musicals as well as the local community theater, occasionally acting in shows.

Family, friends, music, theatre, and storytelling  were his passions.  Throughout his life he continually retold stories from his early years adventuring around the rough and tumble Hoboken of the 1950s. In his final year of life he completed a children’s book about a bicycle relay race in 1966 called “Paperback Riders”. He was a frequent volunteer at Camp Fatima and was a coach for his children’s sports teams.

He is survived by his wife of 41  years, Betsy Reilly,  six sons, James Flynn and wife Shiyo, Bill, Greg, Kevin, Conor, and Kieran Flynn, his granddaughter Lilia Brianna Flynn, his mother Barbara Flynn, sister Mary-Ellen Flynn, two brothers, Terrence, and John Flynn and wife Joanne, nephews Daniel and Jack Flynn.   He was predeceased by his father Donald and brother Tim.

A period of visitation will be held, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM, Friday, October 22, at Newbaker Funeral Home, 200 Route 94, Blairstown, NJ 07825.  An additional visitation will be from 10-11AM, Saturday October 23, 2021 followed by a Celebration of Life at 11 AM.
