Claire Ruth Hance, 98, a resident of Blairstown, NJ, passed away at St. Clare's Hospital on Friday, October 15, after a short illness.
A longtime resident of Boonton, she was born on January 17, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY to the late John Joseph and Nellie Anita Starr Moran. She is predeceased by two siblings, Nancy Brown and Robert Moran, and her husband Raymond Louis Hance. She studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, worked with her husband running X-GI Taxi in the early 50's, as a switchboard operator and payroll manager at Boonton Handbag Factory until the mid-70's, and Rowe International in the 80's. She retired in 2013 after several years as a receptionist at Del Barton School.
She performed in plays at the Red Barn Theater, and jitterbugged with her husband after taking a course at an Arthur Murray studio. She taught Sunday school at the 1st Reformed Church in Boonton and was a beloved member of New Hope Community Church of the Nazarene in Denville. She traveled to Spain and Israel, and as a volunteer in Costa Rica with New Hope Church. She served on the board of trustees of the Boonton Historical Society. She was a devotee of Christ and to prayer. Claire and her husband took a turn at an Arthur Murray Studio where they learned to jitterbug. She applied her creative skills at the sewing machine and in the kitchen where she lovingly prepared everything from lasagna to biscotti. One of her favorite local destinations was Ocean Grove where she relaxed beneath an umbrella with a good book or a crossword puzzle.
