Obituary of Timothy J. Sullivan

The Honorable Judge Timothy Sullivan of Blairstown NJ passed away Saturday June 1 at the age of 84. Judge Sullivan resided in Hillsdale NJ prior to moving to Blairstown and Venice, Florida in 2001. He was appointed a judge to the Superior Court of New Jersey in 1986 and served in the criminal division in Bergen County until 2001. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he practiced law in Hackensack and Ridgewood NJ. After his retirement from the bench in 2001 he remained active with the Intensive Supervision Program and served as commitment judge for Greystone Psychiatric Hospital. Sullivan was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1962 and served in the Diocese of Nassau, Bahamas until he was released from active ministry by Pope Paul VI in 1970. He was born in Bronx, NY to Irish immigrants in 1934 and attended Rice High School and Iona College on basketball scholarships. He was a graduate of St. Meinrad Seminary in 1962. He was a graduate of New York Law School in 1971. Sullivan was upheld in his life's efforts by his wife Lois of 49 years. He took enormous pride, drew inspiration from and shared wisdom with his two sons and daughters in law: Timothy III and Megan, Kieran and Mercedes and his three grandchildren Timothy IV, Paxton, and Sinead. He is additionally survived by his sister in law Maria Schantz, Ed.D. of Montclair and three brothers Michael, Brendan, and Kevin. He was a man of outstanding character, exceptional determinism, and unmatched compassion. He met the unbelievably difficult and complicated roles in his life with enthusiasm and optimism. A period of visitation will be held from 4-8PM, Friday, June 7 at Newbaker Funeral Home, 200 Route 94, Blairstown, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, June 8, at St. Jude Roman Catholic Church, 7 Eisenhower Rd., Blairstown, NJ 07825.
