James E. "Jim" Gilmore, of Blairstown, NJ passed away on December 28, 2018 at Morristown Medical Center, Morristown, NJ at the age of 82. Born in Elizabeth, NJ, Jim was the only son of the late Willard E. and Veronica M. Gilmore of Ironia, NJ.
Jim grew up in Ironia and graduated from Roxbury High School in 1954. He moved to Blairstown, NJ in 1972 with his wife Joan and four sons and was an active part of the community for many years. He was a member of the Blairstown Rotary for over 40 years, and served on the Blairstown Planning Board and North Warren Regional Board of Education. Also, he was an insurance agent and owner of James E. Gilmore Insurance Agency, Succasunna, NJ. Jim and his sons maintained a small farm in Blairstown, Gap View Farm, and helped to establish a local 4-H Club. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a long-time parishioner of St. Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairstown, NJ.
Jim served in the United States Air Force from 1958-1962 and later enjoyed immensely his hobby in aviation, flying a small plan (dubbed Gil-Air) to many destinations for travel and volunteering as a pilot for Air Lifeline, which provided transportation to children who were brought to the USA for medical treatment. After relinquishing his pilot's license in his later years, he and his wife Joan traveled through the United States in their RV.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Joan Scarbrough Gilmore, his four sons, Michael Gilmore, Bangor, PA, James Gilmore, Blairstown, NJ, John Gilmore, Easton, PA and Tom Gilmore, Alexandria,, VA, six grandchildren, Kevin, Melissa, Erin, Shelly, Matt, Nick and one great-grandson, Wesley.
A visitation will be held from 4-8 PM, Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at Newbaker Funeral Home, 200 Route 94 Blairstown, NJ 07825 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00, Thursday, January 3, 2019 at St. Jude Roman Catholic Church, 7 Eisenhower Road, Blairstown, NJ 07825.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Jim's memory be made to a charity of personal choice.
