Obituary of Thys "Ty" Van Solkema

Thys "Ty" VanSolkema 78 years of age of Mt. Bethel, PA. passed away Saturday April 29, 2017 at his home, with his family by his side. Thys was born in the Netherlands on July 9, 1938 to the late Eile and Fjike VanSolkema. Thys came to America when he was 11 years old. He worked for 17 years for Delbert Hill as a farmer and after that he worked at Surge Elevator for 26 years until he retired in 2004. After he retired he worked part time with Jim Detrick building cabinets and also for Dr. Raymond DeCesare doing yard work. He loved working in his garden, yard and flower beds, he loved woodworking and watching wildlife shows, sports, M.A.S.H, and anything with Steve Harvey.

Ty and his wife Frances Rowe VanSolkema were married in October 12 1957 and last year celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. They had been together for a total of 61 wonderful loving years.

Surviving in addition to his wife Frances are his daughter Connie and husband Darryl Moser. A niece that was raised as their daughter, Lisa and husband Andy Makatura. His three brothers Henry and Gladys of Long Valley, NJ. ,Gerrett and Anna of E. Stroudsburg, PA., Sint and Nancy of Hackettstown, NJ. also a stepsister Edie Teune. His 4 grandkids Damon Singer(Michelle) , Dustin Singer, Bryan Makatura and Liane Makatura. He also has 3 great grandkids Angelina, Ryan and Daiton Singer. He was predeceased by his son-in-law Thomas Singer and stepmother, Theresa.

He belonged to the Knowlton Senior Citizens Club of Columbia, NJ. Ty enjoyed traveling to New England and watching his grandchildren play various sports, soccer, wrestling, baseball, basketball, tennis and he enjoyed watching the band concerts. He was raised in the Dutch reform faith.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday May 2, 2017 at 11 AM in the Newbaker Funeral Home, 200 RT. 94, Blairstown, NJ. Visitation will be on Monday May 1 from 6-9 PM at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in the Hope Moravian Cemetery, Hope, NJ.
